Co-op party games are a much more recent encounter for me in the gaming world. Back through my school years, all of my friends loved to get together and face off against each other. You name it, we played all the classics : Mortal Kombat, Smash Bros, the works. If we ever did something together it was always focusing on a bigger, grindy type of game that we would pass controllers on, such as going for all the power stars in Super Mario 64.

However, now I find myself married to someone who enjoys gaming, and doing so together, so I've entered the world of co-op games, such as Overcooked. And it's a genre I actively keep an eye out for new titles to play, so when I came across an opportunity to check out Out of Space, I jumped on board right away.

The game can be played on three maps of different sizes, and can be played either solo or with other players, but the "premise" of each map is the same. You have just moved into your very own apartment, only it's very dirty. You need to run around and clean up the mess, which involves lots of goop, slimey aliens, and trying to supply power to all the rooms in your new place.
Each time you load into the game, the apartment you'll be focused on will be randomly generated. Ultimately, your goal is to clean up every spot of goop in the entire place, vanquish every alien, and power every generator. The smallest map has six generators, and the number goes up for the larger maps.

Your character operates off of a simple energy bar. The longer you walk around, you can watch your energy slowly drain. The more activities you perform, such as using the mop/broom to clean up the goop, or hoisting bags of garbage or knocked out aliens to the recycler, the faster your bar will drain. Once this bar depletes, you'll pass out on the spot until it refills completely, however you can speed this process up by choosing to sleep on couches, chairs or beds.

As you clean the rooms, you're going to encounter plenty of your one and only resistance : the aliens and their goop. Initially, you'll find the goop just about everywhere, but the aliens themselves will usually be confined to one or two rooms. If these rooms are left unattended to, they'll be able to "soak through" the doorways into other rooms, spreading as little pimple-bubbles on the floor and walls. If you can toss some water onto the pimples before they burst though, you'll eradicate them completely.
The other thing you'll find as you work your way through the apartment are a number of boxes. These can contain important pieces of furniture for you, like your couches or beds to sleep on, showers for cleaning yourself off if you get too much goop on you, and sinks for help filling up your bucket(s) of water when you need to get those nasty floor-pimples. Other boxes though will just contain some decorative items, like carpets and photos. These can either be unpacked and put on display, or tossed in the recycler for some extra cash to spend on the things you really need.

You will constantly have access to a marketplace to buy anything and everything you'll ever need. This is how you'll buy the power cores to start up your apartment, since you'll typically only have one of the six readily available. But be careful, you may find yourself buying a superfluous amount since those pesky aliens love to eat the power cores, and can deplete yours if you're not fast enough.
Here is where you'll also be guaranteed to get things like the sleeping apparatus or sinks. If you're lucky though, the randomly generated boxes that start off in your place will already contain these key items and you can save your money.

Whether you're playing solo or with others (it can fit up to four in a game), Out of Space is a wacky fun challenge that will have you itching to get your very first apartment cleaned. The benefit of playing with another person is that you can divvy up tasks, have one person focus on cleaning and knocking out the aliens while another is in charge of dispersal and purchases, or however you choose to spread things out. If you play solo, you won't be completely screwed over though as you'll be able to unpack a dog companion. This guy will stay by your side wherever you go, and if any aliens get nearby, his bark will be powerful enough to stun them allowing you the time to get rid of them. Either way, this is certainly a game you need in your library, so don't wait...move into the community today!
