Badass Hero (PC) Indie One Shot

When I first heard of Badass Hero my mind instantly shot back to the Sega Genesis days, and a game called Comix Zone. For those not familiar with it, Comix Zone was a side scrolling beat-em-up game which the story played out through the pages of a comic book as you travelled from panel to panel. If you recall, earlier this year I reviewed it on this blog, and you can check out that review here.

Badass Hero takes the same approach but, in the eyes of this gamer, it does it so much better. You play as the titular "badass hero" or rather, a used-to-be badass hero. It is your duty to fight through every panel, re-writing his story and restoring peace to the comic book universe while reclaiming your glory.
A side scrolling shoot-em-up, you can arm your hero with all sorts of guns, throw grenades, and slash away with a powerful melee attack to waste anybody in your way. You'll start off by default with a machine gun, but along the way you can find special crates with either more powerful machine guns, or different guns all together. Your grenades can be upgraded as well by finding newer and better ones in the levels, but if you're happy with what you currently have you can always absorb everything you find for points.

Enemies will fill every panel that you enter, all with health bars over their heads and a thirst for your blood. You'll encounter skeletons with mage staffs, flying bug-like creatures that will zoom after you, plants coming out of the walls and floor, and kamikaze bugs that will leap at you when close enough, exploding on contact and dealing a swift blow of damage if they connect with you. However, the ones you kill will drop black ink-blots that you can collect for additional points to spend on your hero.
There's three skill trees to expand in this game, to make your hero a true badass. These cover ways to make expand his health, give him additional stock of grenades, faster reloading, increasing chance at critical hits, any number of things to make you even more indestructible.

Graphically, this game is beautiful. The art style stays true to the comic book theme, and every frame runs extremely smooth. Badass Hero is an amazing game, one that will be tons of fun no matter how easy or tough it is for you. Each death gives you a chance to upgrade your hero and get right back into the mix, and all the levels are procedurally generated so even between deaths you won't be guaranteed to face the same challenges all over again. It's also worth noting that as of right now, this game is only available on Steam but 1. It does feature controller support and 2. In 2018 this game will be getting released digitally for both Xbox One and Playstation 4!!
