No Heroes Here (PC) Indie One Shot

To be completely honest, when I first fired up No Heroes Here, my expectations were low. It's a tower defense game, and I've never been a huge fan of those types of games. Even in Assassin's Creed Revelations when they introduce the Den Defense, I hated it, and ended up hating that game entirely. Once I entered the first level of No Heroes Here, I was intrigued though. By the time I made it to the second, the hooks were in and they were in deep.

While at it's core, this game is a tower defense, it takes a much different approach than what I've come across before. That's not to say it's the first time it's ever been done in the genre, it's just the first time I've personally encountered it.

Most tower defense games are extremely simple. You select a troop type, place it on a map, and watch as the battle unfolds replacing your troops as needed. However, what No Heroes Here does is place you in direct control of said troops, making you actually feel like you are defending the tower (or in this game's case, castle) yourself. Blending in elements of crafting and some platforming as well, you will actually have to work to defend the castle from all the troops trying to take it down.
Each level follows the same formula. There's cannon's placed on the sides of the castle, you have crafting tables, ovens, raw materials, gunpowder, and even honey. You need to bring each of the elements through the correct process before it can be loaded into the cannons, which are set at fixed angles, and can then be fired down upon the attacking troops.

What is typically a very point-and-clicky type of game, No Heroes Here takes a completely different approach. You need to be extremely active, zipping around crafting the items necessary, loading up your cannons, and even cleaning them after every single shot. Things can get real hectic real fast, and it is so much fun.

For a 14.99 price tag, this game is absolutely worth it. As of right now, it's just available on PC (with both Windows and Mac support) but it is expected on PS4, XB1 and the Switch in early 2018. If at any point I hear of a more firm release date on consoles I will update this review.
