Max : The Curse of Brotherhood (PS4)

As a follow up to their first game release, The Curse of Brotherhood continues the story of Max from Max and the Magic Marker. Max arrives home from school one day to find his brother Felix in his room playing roughly with his toys. Angry, Max opens his laptop and runs a Giggle search on how to get rid of your brother, when a result comes up with a magical spell on it promising to permanently remove pesky younger brothers.

Curious, Max reads the spell out loud and opens up a portal in his bedroom wall, with a monster coming through to snatch up Felix and rip him away to another world. Without hesitation, Max jumps in after his brother to save him. On the other side, Max is introduced to a magical world filled with lots of traps and puzzles. Armed with his Magic Marker, Max must navigate the world and save his younger brother.

This game features heavy elements of puzzles and platforming, both of which can and are predominantly done with the marker. All throughout the world, sections of the ground and walls will glow meaning they can be manipulated by either raising platforms, growing vines, or even creating fireballs. Each thing you create can also be destroyed giving you infinite chances to get it right.

Since there is no combat in The Curse of Brotherhood, and Max can fall by only a single hit, all enemies need to be either completely avoided, or redirected by manipulating the area in front of you. Avoiding them can be pretty simple to do, since most only attack within a certain area, and if you get too close you have enough time to react and run away before you get hit. Redirecting them though definitely increases the puzzle aspect of the game, as most of the time you'll have to manipulate things once to get the enemy out of the way, and then do it again so you can get yourself through.

Every level in this game is absolutely gorgeous, and the character models for Max, his brother and all the enemies look incredible as well. It's very easy to fire up this game and just get lost in the visuals. All the controls run extremely smoothly, with the Magic Marker being my favorite of all. It is so much fun being able to just lift up sections of ground to get one of the enemies out of your way.

Whether or not you've played the first game (which I haven't, but between writing paragraphs here Ive ordered myself a copy) Max : The Curse of Brotherhood is a fantastic game that will have your brain working, and you having a ton of fun playing it.
