Ebony Spire : Heresy (PC) Indie One-Shot

You read the title right. For the first time on this blog, I'm featuring a PC game. Not too long ago, I was put in touch with the developer of this game. Yes, singular, the man who built this game did so by himself. I was provided an opportunity to check out his recently released game on Steam, Ebony Spire : Heresy, and I have to say, I am ever grateful for that opportunity.

Ebony Spire is a throwback to the classic dungeon crawling genre of gaming, and presented in a 16-bit style. From the main menu, you're able to choose one of three characters to play as : The Berserker, Night Shade, and a Scroll Mage. Each offers its own approach to how you play the game, making it extremely welcoming for any style of gamer who fires it up. Want to beat face directly? Embark on your journey with the Berserker. Attacking from a distance more your thing? The Night Shade and Scroll Mage offer two slightly different approaches to taking on your foes with magic spells.

The point of the game is simple : you start on level one, and must make it to level ten and defeat the dungeon boss. Throughout each level are scattered numerous items, enemies, weapons, a hidden portal that can warp you to a far different world, and your goal : the stairs to ascend to the next level of the dungeon. But, while the point of the game is simple, the journey towards the top level won't be.

Each level is covered with enemies, ranging from knights and mages to other...creatures. And if you step through one of the portals, the enemies you meet here might be even more fantastical. To make things even more interesting, all these enemies are able to pick up the unique items and weapons that are available to you through each level. So don't think that you have your own personal arsenal scattered around waiting for you to discover it. Everything is up for grabs in this massive free-for-all.

I personally enjoyed this game a lot, and I've always been horrible at dungeon crawlers. Despite that, though, I found myself having fun instead of feeling the rage. My personal best (so far) has been making it to level four of the dungeon. I don't know if I'll ever get good enough to make it to the top and even kill the final boss, but I sure as hell want to keep trying.

Ebony Spire : Heresy is an amazing game, and one you should definitely consider picking up on Steam. It won't take up much space on your hard drive, and it won't burn a hole in your wallet either. In a time where a lot of games seem to care more about how good they look instead of how well they play, this one looks amazing for the style it's in and delivers some excellent gameplay.
