A handful of months ago, I streamed a hands on preview of Kill it with Fire when they released their Ignition demo on Steam. Suffice it to say, the demo was a ton of fun. Everyone always jokes if there's a spider in your house you need to just burn it down and move on. Well, this game from Casey Donnellan and tinyBuild allows you to basically do just that. And what's not to love about a concept that's so over the top?
The main game consists of a number of levels in various locations. You'll start off in a small section of a house, eventually progressing out into a town near a barn, a gas station...your spider homicidal ways will bring you all over. And while killing the spiders is part of the goal of the game, you're really going to be focused on how you're killing these eight-legged freaks, and that's where the real crazy and whacky comes in.
You arrive at your first job and shortly find yourself a clipboard, which serves you two purposes. Firstly this is where your objectives are displayed so you know exactly where you must go and what you must do. But, this also becomes your first weapon in making these things go splat. It is far from being your only weapon though, this clipboard is just one of the more normal ones that you would expect to use.
Objectives come in two forms...sort of. The ones you need to complete in order to fully finish the level are the ones that come up on your keyboard. Typically you'll only begin a level with one or two of these revealed, and the others are just strings of question marks. To open these other ones you'll need to hit certain milestones in the level, or you can actually find additional tasks hidden in the rooms which will open these up.
The other form of aren't really "objectives" but they do hide you off from areas of the level. Various doors will be locked and have a number over them, this number being how many spiders you need to kill in order for the door to open. This is also how you open the exit for the level, so you can end the level just by killing X amount of spiders and not needing to meet all your objectives. Additionally, some smaller things like dresser drawers or cabinets will be locked as well, these ones are hidden behind how many objectives you complete. Opening these tends to give you more ammo or a brand new weapon.
So, whats your arsenal like? Well if you can think of it...you can use it. It starts off kind of normal using the clipboard, but then you get introduced to things like hairspray, allowing you to make yourself a torch. Eventually you'll be toting around guns, from revolvers to shotguns and rocket launchers. Finding the spiders can be hard though, as they like to hide in tons of places. Once you smack them they tend to run away, but luckily you can also carry around various types of cheese balls as bait, setting them up for lots of squishy goodness.
If you enjoy completing the objectives, the good news is once you finish the level, the ones you completed are saved. So if you missed one, or it was hard to set up, you can wrap it all up and try again. An early objective/challenge is to get a double kill of spiders with the shotgun. By the time I had found the shotgun I was basically done with the level with no spiders left...not very easy to kill two of nothing. So if you're itching to get that 100% at the worst you'll just need to replay levels once in a while.
Which, honestly, isn't a bad thing at all. Kill it with Fire is an amazing game that is a lot of fun. I got hooked checking out the Ignition demo, and even though the two levels in that were the very first two levels in the main game, I had no problem at all replaying them again. In fact, I enjoyed it immensely. This is the perfect game to just sit down and knock out a level or two, and for those of you out there that want to burn down houses just to kill a few spiders, look no further. Your dream has come true.
