|| NEWS || Devolver Digital Direct 2020

Last year at E3 2019, I was treated to my personal first chance of watching a Devolver Digital Press Conference and...wow. Wow was the only thing I could manage to say. They dropped some pretty stellar game teases but it was the over-the-top sketch that surrounded these game announcements which was...well, crazy to say the least. So it's with no surprise that I'm eager to see what they pull of this year, and the wait is finally over. Here we go with Devolver Digital Direct 2020.

The Games

Shadow Warrior 3

Our first reveal was a bit of gameplay for the upcoming Shadow Warrior 3. Prefaced by a dramatic recounting of Devolver and Flying Wild Hog's resurgence of the classic series, eventually we were cut away to a reveal that was a mixture of cinematic and gameplay. I personally have never played the games yet, reboot or original. Actually, not long before the Direct, Shadow Warrior 3 was leaked as an announcement I installed the reboot title and just haven't gotten a chance to jump into it yet. Based off this quick trailer though, I won't be waiting long to do so. The gunplay looks intense and smooth, loaded with an absolute ton of blood and guts to hold your hand throughout.

Fall Guys

This game has been announced for some time now. I personally was up close and personal with their massive display at this years PAX East, watching a ton of gameplay. If you've seen anything with this game and you aren't excited for it to release, you should probably check yourself for a pulse. It's whacky, and looks very promising to be a ton of fun with a whole mess of people playing. So what else was there to announce? Well how about some additional game footage and the game's release date of August 4th for PS4 and Steam.

Carrion

Another title we've seen announced in the past, we were treated to yet another trailer and additional footage of this interesting looking bit-style game. In this title, you play the role of the villain, the amorphous creature Carrion. You've been imprisoned and now it's your job to break out and devour those who tried to trap you. Again, since this title had been announced before our treat was the confirmed release date coming up very quickly of July 23. If you've been waiting for this title, wait no longer.

The Unintended

A series of reveals teasing sequels to games that were totally never intended to be actually made was squeezed in to the conference. This included Getting Down with Bennet Foddy the sequel to the extremely tough platformer Getting Over It. Sonic Fox's Furry Fighters 4 was teased despite the rest of the series 1-3 not even existing. A fake studio was announced, BeansTeam, as well as a broken file featuring not Geralt of Rivia's bath.

Olija

A new game was announced without much revealed about it's story. Based on the gameplay shown it appears to be a pixel-based Soulslike. While I'm not a huge fan of the exact pixel style used for this game, the gameplay does look pretty fun. Your character has what appears to be some sort of harpoon-like weapon, giving you the ability to dash and utilize items in the world to climb and platform higher. It looked like a couple of bosses were teased as well and it could be an interesting title.

Serious Sam 4

Yet another series that I've never personally experienced, and this is one that I honestly have no desire to. The trailer features a lot of enemies shown off as well as gunplay, and some kick-ass heavy metal music to back you up while unleashing an endless stream of bullets. As of now it's slated to drop in August so if this series has been something you've enjoyed, wait no longer.

Devolverland Expo

The end of our 2020 Devolver experience dropped a free-to-play game that was available on the spot. This first-person shooter, or sorry first-person "marketing simulator" brings you on the ground of an abandoned convention center after the Expo (assumingly E3) was cancelled. The trailer shown featured a truly abandoned convention center is filled with a bunch of exhibits alluding to a lot of Devolver's games. It didn't particularly reveal if there is some threat going on in the center or if you're just free-roaming and randomly shooting stuff up, so that amount of detail will have to wait until I can get my hands on it for you. Expect me to do so soon because it definitely looks fun, and hopefully can be backed up as well.

The Skit

Arguably the real star of Devolver's conferences is the story and sketches they squeeze in around the trailers and reveals. It's one that I'm not fully caught up on because it's apparently carried through the same arc over all of their conferences the last handful of years. This year's focused on the aftermath of last years and a plot to stop the "future's future's future" of Devolver taking over the gaming world with some marketing ploy. It's pretty nuts, hard to follow, but hysterical and worth the wild ride.

The narrative this year featured some of those from Devolver "trapped" within the conference itself, while someone from outside passed along information on Devolver's ultimate evil plan for world-game domination. It wasn't as bloody as previous year's had been but it made just about as much sense...which isn't a lot. But if you love Devolver and you got to watch this Direct live, you surely enjoyed it. The games announced look like they'll be a lot of fun, and who knows maybe more are hidden within Devolverland Expo? Either way, it was a great time, and I can't wait to get my hands on some of these games this year.
