I'm sure I've lost count of how many times on this blog I've expressed just how much I love a good story in a game. Combine that story with excellent gameplay and you're bound to lose me in a heartbeat. It's nothing special, quite a simple formula but it's one that gets missed more often than hit I feel. Neversong started off a bit slow and I wasn't sure how I'd feel, but before long I got hooked and didn't want to put it down.
The game tells the story of Peet, a young boy who had been trapped in a coma for a while. He wakes up to discover the world around him has fallen into a nightmare. There's horrendous screams coming from the nearby asylum, the adults around are acting strange, and Peet's girlfriend Wren has been kidnapped. Now he must dive into the horrors around him to discover what's really going on, find Wren, and maybe learn a lot more about his own past.
As Peet, you'll need to explore everywhere you can in order to figure out what's going on and try to fix it. A great portion of this game is going to be the platforming with a good spattering of combat, which can be handled with your trusty baseball bat. The platforming is your basic stuff that you would expect, such as jumping or swinging from vines with magnetic ends once you have Wren's magnetic gloves. However there are some things you wouldn't expect, like how later in the game one of the items you receive is Wren's skateboard...I won't tell you why though.
Combat is a lot of fun in this game. Your generic enemies come in many different types, each with their own little bit of strategy you'll need for taking them down. Some are incredibly aggressive, while others retreat before coming at you, but all their patterns are easy to learn and adapt to as you come across them all.
Bosses are a much different beast though. A lot of the story in Neversong is focused on music, since one of the first things you come across is a piano which you can play in Wren's home. Each time you play a specific song it unlocks a new area of the house to get you a new item. The songs required for this are what you gain from exploring and defeating these bosses. All of the songs are five notes long, so each fight is broken up into five phases with the completion of each phase locking in a note for you.
As I mentioned, I was hesitant about this game at first since it only starts you off with...well nothing, really. Nothing except the ability to walk and jump. But boy am I glad I rode it out and gave this one a chance. Everything about Neversong is absolutely incredible and this is a hard game to put down. A strong story combined with excellent gameplay, this is surely a game you should consider playing sometime soon.
