Top-down racing games have always had a soft spot in my gaming heart. It's a genre I grew up playing in the arcades, and it was always my default in school when trying to sneak in some gaming time with some flash titles online.
Race Arcade on PS4 instantly brought me back to those old gaming feelings of the past. It's a simplistic top-down racing game that throws vibrant colors in your face while you zip around and windy race courses.
Featuring over a hundred tracks to race on, you'll hit every single one over the course of the game's seven championship modes. Each championship focuses on a single car type, offering a few championships per car. You can zip around in a drift-style street racer, or power up in a Formula One car, or a bunch of others.
As soon as I dropped into this game I had a ton of fun. The controls are really simple and don't feel clunky at all. I didn't notice any sort of delayed response or sensitivity issues. The only "tweaks" necessary was the fact that each car type drives differently. Formula One cars are stronger on straightaway's, hitting higher speeds, while the street racer finds it's strength in the corners.
What I liked most about Race Arcade though was it's unlock system. Most games with this much to offer, require you to win X amount of championships, or win X amount of medals in races. All you need here, is the money you earn from the championships you feature in. Which makes this very accessible to players of any and all skill levels, because it means you don't have to be good at winning to progress, you can grind those championships until you earn enough.
So if you're a fan of the old school, top-down racing genre, you won't want to pass this title up. It's short, sweet, and a lot of fun. And if you're looking to find your first chance to see this genre for what it's worth, look no further. Race Arcade is the perfect way to introduce yourself to top-down racing.
