Azkend 2 (Nintendo Switch) Indie One Shot
Wrapping up my focus on 10tons LTD, we visit yet another match-three type game, except this time around we aren't shooting marbles. Let's talk about Azkend 2 on the Switch!
Unlike the last game, Sparkle Unleashed there's a bit more of a story this time. You'll be sailing from Liverpool to New York (no you're not on that ship), a wicked sea storm comes up and pulls your ship down into a maelstrom. Once through, you find yourself in the depths of the Earth, far away from civilization in a land that may have never been seen by eyes other than yours.
What follows is a series of Candy Crush style levels, with a mixture of item-filled tiles splayed out before you. You will need to draw a line connecting a minimum of three-in-a-row, to eliminate them and allow for new items to tumble down into the puzzle.
The story connection for these puzzles is that each leg of your journey, you need to find a key piece of equipment in order to move ahead, and these puzzles will unlock a piece of that item. For instance, the first chapter of puzzles requires that you use a pair of binoculars. You'll need to solve a series of puzzles until you've collected all the pieces of the binoculars.
Now, here is my two favorite parts. First, each chapter of puzzles has their own theme or challenge, so it becomes more than just moving the piece of equipment down to the bottom. Some levels will have colored tiles, either yellow or gray, that need to be turned blue. To turn them blue you need to successfully make a match, with one of your matching items being on one of the wrongly-colored tiles.
The other cool part is the mini game you get to play between chapters. You are presented with a scene in front of you (extremely beautiful by the way, the art in this game is incredible). In the top right, a small circle will be filled with a tiny portion of a picture, and your job is to find that spot somewhere in the big version that takes up the rest of the screen. Azkend won't allow you to just randomly tap until you find it, because if you do this, chunks of time will fall off the clock.
I'm not normally a fan of these match-three type games, but I am a fan of what 10tons did with this one. The extra challenge on each level, the mini-game between chapters, equipment you fin can potentially become an item within the game, providing certain power-ups when you match their respective tiles. I'd have to say my favorite level-challenge is the one with the bugs (in the photo above). Three beetle-like bugs will start off on the bottom row, and you need to make matches next to them to deal damage, ideally killing them before they get to the top.
It might not be a game that you dedicate a lot of time to, or one that you fire up purely with the intent of seeing it through to the end, but Azkend 2 is a ton of fun. The story is entertaining, accompanied by beautiful artwork through it all. Definitely consider adding this gem to your library.

I had promised a review for 10tons newest PC game Tesla vs Lovecraft, however some important issues arose within my family that needed some attention, so that review will be delayed until the end of the weekend, possibly Monday morning at the latest.
