Kid Tripp (Nintendo Switch) Indie One Shot
After a short introduction into Kid Tripp, I very quickly learned a couple of things.
1. This game is extremely difficult.
2. I absolutely loved it for reason #1.
When you play Kid Tripp, you might find yourself thinking that it feels like it should just be a mobile app. While it is fairly true, as this game is an on-rails platformer, there's something about it that just makes it feel at home on the Switch.
The game follows the titular Kid Tripp who, after crashing onto a mysterious island, needs your help getting him off. You'll have to run and jump your way past a variety of enemies and obstacles as you traverse the games twenty levels to freedom. Smacking your enemies down with a rock is also an option, as you have an unlimited supply of these on your run through the game, or you can go old school and just jump on their heads. Either way, they are everywhere and in quite a few different shapes. You'll have fish flopping out of water, monkeys hanging out of trees throwing stuff at you...there's always going to be something in your way.
This fish kill was actually obtained by my almost 15-month old son :) |
Graphically, it's a big throwback to the old 8 and 16-bit gaming days. Everything is blocky and colorful, and the enemies all have little animations to show that they are in fact moving instead of just moonwalking across the stage floor.
One thing that might be a turn-off for most people with this game is the fact that there's "only" twenty levels. But trust me, they won't be an easy bunch of levels. Kid Tripp is far from easy, and with only a $3.99 price tag it definitely gives you a bang for your buck...or four bucks.
There's a lot more to offer in this game too, with extra challenges and, of course, bragging rights amongst your friends who also own this game. If you have any sort of love for platforming games, you need this one in your library. It may start off feeling like a mobile app but I absolutely love this game on the Switch.
Kid Tripp is an excellent challenge, and should be played over and over.
